Lockdown has been a challenge for teachers and pupils alike. We want to help you reinvigorate your teaching with dance!

This online teacher training session will enable primary school teachers to integrate dance effectively within everyday teaching as a tool to engage and motivate pupils and strengthen curriculum learning.

Teachers will be introduced to an easy to follow, tried and tested, inclusive methodology for developing pupil’s learning on curriculum topics through movement pupils create themselves. Pupils explore subjects through improvised movement and work together to create choreographies that cement and reflect their learning. Teachers will experience this methodology in practise and its application to Key Stages 1 and 2. Through physical activities and discussion teachers will be supported to plan dance activities appropriate to their teaching contexts that enhance and embed pupils’ curriculum learning. Teachers will feel empowered to lead these activities back at their own settings, supported by a take home resource pack.

The session will draw from examples of our work with Charlotte Sharman Primary School, where dance has positively impacted pupil’s learning particularly in language acquisition within literacy, and our Next Choreography course for young people. It will also consider how dance can be part of a primary schools’ recovery curriculum as pupils return after lockdown. The KS1 sample lesson shared will take inspiration from the book We Are Here by Oliver Jeffers, and KS2 will focus on Space and the Planets.

Learning outcomes for participating teachers:

Knowledge and understanding of using dance within everyday curriculum teaching including;

• how to plan and facilitate creative, physical movement activities linked to curriculum learning

• how to elicit children’s creative responses, empowering and engaging pupils

• how to stretch and challenge the complexity and depth of pupils’ creative work and their analytical appreciation skills

• how to compose pupil’s creative work into choreography, and support pupils’ agency within this process

This event is suitable for teachers and teaching assistants working in primary schools, from all disciplines, and educational settings, with an interest in creative learning. We regret that this session is not open to colleagues from cultural organisations or freelancers working with schools. We encourage teachers to participate in pairs or small groups to make the most of the session.

This session will be delivered using Zoom, so participating teachers will need access to this technology. You will be encourage to move during the session. You will be supplied with videos used during the session and with a resource pack to refer to following the session.
