This online teacher training session will enable primary school teachers to integrate dance effectively within everyday teaching as a tool to engage and motivate pupils and strengthen curriculum learning.
Teachers will be introduced to an easy to follow, tried and tested, inclusive methodology for developing pupil’s learning on curriculum topics through movement pupils create themselves. Pupils explore subjects through improvised movement and work together to create choreographies that cement and reflect their learning. Teachers will experience this methodology in practise and its application to Key Stages 1 and 2. Through physical activities and discussion teachers will be supported to plan dance activities appropriate to their teaching contexts that enhance and embed pupils’ curriculum learning. Teachers will feel empowered to lead these activities back at their own settings, supported by a take home resource pack.
The session will draw from examples of our work with Charlotte Sharman Primary School, where dance has positively impacted pupil’s learning particularly in language acquisition within literacy, and our Next Choreography course for young people. It will also consider how dance can be part of a primary schools’ recovery curriculum as pupils return after lockdown. The KS1 sample lesson shared will take inspiration from the book We Are Here by Oliver Jeffers, and KS2 will focus on Space and the Planets.
